Don’t Go With The Flow, Be The Flow
“Don’t Go With The Flow, Be The Flow”
This is a quote by Elif Shafak, a Turkish-British public speaker. To go with the flow means to accept and follow the conventional and common norms of society. The societal rules tell what you should do and what you shouldn’t. You have to look, behave and think according to the expected stereotypical ways. Flow includes a vision, perception, activity, ambition, belief or even a trivial idea. The concept we are fed with is that only by going with the flow we can prove ourselves in front of this society. For me, to go with the flow is to surrender your own self for the sake of surviving in society. Going with the flow involves you to do similar things as others do, making you an average person.
The question here is that how can you become the flow instead of blindly going with the flow? The answer is by identifying your individual true interests, by searching the bona fide ‘you’. Do what gives you satisfaction, contentment, and peace of mind. You are given choices in the case of speech, actions, thoughts, occupations, and relationships, etc. You are the one who has to make decisions. Your decisions must be in harmony with your inner gratification. There are some emotions which indicate whether you’re in your own flow or not. You always get the consequent happiness after doing the task in your own flow. You don’t take it as a mere burden rather enjoy doing it. Your mind is ordered and focused and your objectives are clear. You don’t have any doubts whether you’re doing right or wrong. To be the flow is connected to doing what is meaningful to you. Do what you want to not what you need to.
“Only Dead Fish Go With The Flow”
Not going with the flow is not that easy as it seems. Even if we’re fired with the passion of our own flow, we have the fear of being different and not being praised by others. We don’t want to look down upon, we want to fit in our surroundings. You know yourself better than anyone else. You’ll be hesitant at first but success lies in ‘trying’. You should always try, make mistakes and then work with more effort and struggle. You may have to make sacrifices but you have to be committed to your goals. Work with dedication, learn new things and grab opportunities. Step forward. Be courageous and bold enough to face hostility and discouragements. Have an abiding faith in yourself. Discover your personal legend and pursue it until you achieve it. I’ve seen doctors wanting to be musicians, engineers wanting to be pilots and so on. I’ve seen people hating their jobs but still doing them because they think that they don’t have any other choice. But that’s not true at all, there’s no perfect time than now. It’s you who have to make the decisions. Why give excuses to others when it’s you who have to build your future. Always remember that your future is worth than ‘fitting in’.
